As climbing grows, so does the need for fair, consistent, and confident judges. Whether you’re a climber, a parent, or just curious, judging is a great way to get involved and give back to the sport.
You don’t need to be an expert to start—we’ll show you the ropes.
We offer a clear pathway:
Introductory training course (Lead & Boulder)
Ongoing mentorship at our Auckland College Climbing Series
Opportunities to judge at local and national comps
Many of our judges started at school events and now co-judge at Climbing New Zealand nationals.
We run Lead & Boulder judging courses every year (usually March–May), led by experienced IFSC-certified officials—including Olympic Judge Nelson Lam.
You don’t need to commit to judging to attend. It’s a great way to:
Learn the rules
Understand scoring
Support your climbing kids
We also have recorded sessions for those who can’t attend in person. Email judgetrainingaccs@gmail.com for access.
Piki – the electronic scoring tool used across New Zealand competitions (not used internationally)
ClimbAlong – new international-standard scoring platform introduced in NZ in 2024
